A dramatic 1-0 away to Cardiff City on Friday night has put Wolverhampton Wanderers on the brink of winning the English Championship and gaining automatic promotion to the English Premier League.
In the battle of the top two in the division, it was Wolves who came out on top after a stunning Ruben Neves free-kick sailed into the top corner of the net.
Chances came Cardiff’s way but despite two stoppage time penalties, they couldn’t find a way to equalise, delighting the away support who are already celebrating their return to the top-flight.
At the heart of it all was goalkeeper John Ruddy who saved one of the missed penalties to secure the three points. It comes after criticism recently from some sections of the Wolves support for below par performances.
There was none of that after this one though, with many taking to social media to share their joy with his performance…
Still cannot believe it happened. Yes Wolves have spent a lot, but the spine of the team like Ruddy who moved on a free just shows the character of the team. #Wwfc

Pretty much all the squad have rightly been praised all season but really pleased for Ruddy last night criticised by some in recent weeks but last night he was awesome. Not overworked but superb when called upon #wwfc #wolves

The mistakes ruddy has made this season, last night he made up for them all. Brilliant team performance and loved the celebration at the end 😍 #wwfc

There's no doubt that ruddy won't be coming with us to the premier league, but he has more than played his part, yes he's made mistakes, but never deserved the sort of stick he's had at times #wwfc

Been a critic of Ruddy but you can’t underestimate the quality of that penalty save…It was behind him! #wwfc

After the stick he's got in recent weeks, absolutely thrilled for John Ruddy. 👏👏👏 #WWFC

My god my nerves are still wrecked, what an ending. Ruddy has had his critics lately but he’s made two blinding saves tonight, what a way to start the weekend off #wwfc
