Wolves’ Matt Doherty is blasted by ROI fans after playing at left-back

The Republic of Ireland maintained their unbeaten record in Group D of Euro 2020 qualifying with a 0-0 draw with Georgia.

Mick McCarthy’s men struggled against the home side as they managed to record just 45% possession and just three shots on target, per SofaScore.

The 60-year-old was forced into making a change to his defence as usual left-back Enda Stevens missed this one through suspension, so Matt Doherty deputised in his absence.

Despite being part of a back four that kept a clean sheet, plenty of ROI supporters took to social media to blast the Wolves man.

The 27-year-old is primarily a right wing-back for the west Midlands club, having played 134 of his 263 appearances there, per Transfermarkt’s recorded matches.

One fan claimed he was the worst player on the pitch while another said he was having a nightmare at the back.

Others called that he was “poor” and “shaky” with a further member of the Boys in Green fanbase believing the eight-capped man becomes a clown when playing for his national side considering he looks top class when featuring domestically.
