Gary Cahill is unsettled at Chelsea and is considering bringing his six-year spell at Stamford Bridge to a close this summer, according to the Evening Standard.

What's the story, then?

The Standard report that Cahill became unsettled last season and is thinking about leaving the club where he won the 2012 Champions League, one of six major trophies he has scooped during his time in west London.

They report that Cahill's preferred position on the left of a back three was taken up by German international Antonio Rudiger - who only joined last summer - in 2017/18 and that he was frustrated by his lack of gametime.

They say that Cahill will seek assurances on his playing time from new Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri, but given that the former Napoli manager prefers a back four, his opportunities look set to become even more limited, especially in light of reports that Italian international centre-half Daniele Rugani is moving closer to joining the Blues from Juventus.

Wolves should swoop in

If a place in a back three is what Cahill is seeking then it just so happens that Wolves have one going; there is a gap alongside captain Conor Coady and Willy Boly to be filled.

Adding Cahill's vast international and Champions League experience in that role would take Nuno Santo's backline onto a new level.

Across the Midlands, Aston Villa reaped the rewards of having Chelsea stalwart John Terry in the dressing room - Jack Grealish in particular seemed to flourish - and Wolves would be hoping that 6ft 4in Cahill could have a similar impact.
