While Wolves are lavishing it up on the Premier League’s first-ever winter break with a trip to Marbella, not everything is going swimmingly for one of their soon-to-be ex-players back in England.
Helder Costa is currently out on loan to Leeds United in the Championship, where their quest for promotion has hit a major obstacle having lost four of their last five matches.
This has been topped off by defeat to one of their nearest challengers, Nottingham Forest, on Saturday evening and it’s fair to say Costa’s display epitomised their struggles as he put in a disastrous showing.
At the end of the season, the 26-year-old’s temporary switch to Elland Road will become a permanent fixture regardless of the outcome for a whopping £15m – Wolves have had Leeds’ pants down here.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side were beaten 2-0 at the City Ground, which sees them sit four points behind league leaders West Brom.
Costa featured the full 90 minutes, and per SofaScore, failed to register an accurate cross despite eight attempts, won just 28.5% of his ground duels and even lost possession 20 times – the second-most in the Whites starting XI.
As someone who is heavily involved in the incomings and outgoings at the club, it’s fair to suggest that sporting director Kevin Thelwell played his part in this deal happening and it’ll probably be seen as his final gift before his own departure later this month.
With the transfer window now closed, the only outstanding piece of business is Costa’s move to Leeds becoming permanent this summer, so thanks for that financial boost, Thelwell.
Costa has only managed three goals and two assists this league campaign, per Transfermarkt, a number that has been eclipsed by Adama Traore who has contributed towards 15 goals in all competitions and is quite rightfully the first-choice in the role.
