Wolves have outlined their intentions for Deadline Day addition Luke Matheson after U18 boss Steve Davis' comments in a conversation with Tim Spiers and Jacqui Oatley during the latest The Molineux View podcast on The Athletic.

What's been said?

The west Midlanders bolstered their youth ranks with an array of new incomings in the January transfer window with Enzo Loiodice and Leonardo Campana joining alongside Matheson.

Rochdale have kept hold of the teenager for the remainder of the season before he will return to Molineux and compete for a place in Nuno Santo's first-team.

Speaking about the 17-year-old this week, Davis said:

"I think the hope is that when you do bring a Luke Matheson in for instance that he's going to get into the first-team squad.

"You have to trust the judgement of the recruitment, it's then also down to the player - he's 17. He's still got a lot to do.

"We know his potential, we know what he is capable of in terms of his physicality and what he can do. He's done it against Manchester United in the cup and things like that, so he's shown that he has that.

"And then it is coming into this environment now and is, obviously first of all, settling in and giving him that time and giving him that opportunity to be with the first-team - let them make their judgement of him, so see what they think and how he's going to fit in.

"If not, he drops into the 23s and plays with the 23s and gets the game opportunity until there's another time he gets another opportunity with the first-team."

Potential impact

There's no guarantee that the young starlet can be fast-tracked through the setup at Wolves, but Matheson could be a very good candidate to do exactly that.

He has received raving reviews in the past, none apter than the one from ex-boss Keith Hill who claimed the right-back is destined to go all the way to the top.

"You have no questions as a manager when you work with Luke Matheson about where he’s going to end up. He’s going to end up at the very top."

Matheson has even contended against top-flight opposition this season too - scoring against Man Utd, something that Wolves could only do once in four attempts, and taking Newcastle to a replay in the FA Cup.

It means that Matt Doherty, the only senior right wing-back in the side could have some genuine competition in the future.

The 28-year-old has played 33 times in all competitions and has made more appearances (125) under the Portuguese boss than any other Wolves manager, but fans have been far from impressed with his form this campaign.

Who on earth is that?!?! Can you name all of these obscure January signings?

And in other news, Wolves failing to meet a key Nuno DEMAND could actually be a BLESSING in disguise...
