Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic may not have made a blistering start to life in the Premier League but it’s still regarded as one of the finest strikers in world football.
An experienced veteran that boasts time with some of the biggest clubs in the world, including Ajax, both Milan sides, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, Ibrahimovic’s opinion on football should certainly be valued- though his choice of greatest ever player has raised some eyebrows.
Rather than going for a conventional choice of Pele or Diego Maradona, and overlooking modern greats like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, Zlatan told United Review that his greatest ever is former Brazil striker Ronaldo.
“I think Ronaldo was phenomenal. He was the player that whatever he did it became ‘wow.’ He could do a difficult thing and it became magic.”
“He would take the ball and it was like him saying ‘I’ll take care of it now.’ You didn’t have that kind of football player before and you don’t have it today. He doesn’t exist.”
“As a young player, I watched him and said to myself ‘I want to be exactly like that,’ the player who makes the difference, the shining light, simple as that.”
Never getting the chance to play with his hero but did feature for three of the Brazilian’s former sides in Inter, AC Milan and Barcelona.
Zlatan’s choice is understandable, as Ronaldo was an exceptional player who’s up there on the list of the best ever, but putting him number one is a bold move.
