Glasgow Rangers are yet to announce any deadline day deals as it stands but Ross Wilson has been busy in the transfer window elsewhere...

What's the story?

According to The Athletic, Rangers rejected an approach from an as-of-yet unnamed Serie A side for Colombian forward Alfredo Morelos.

The Gers striker has been the centre of attention with Ligue 1 side Lille among the clubs also in the mix.

But it's claimed that Wilson dismissed a loan deal of less than £1.82m over the weekend, which would have included an option to buy as well, although this is even less than what Lille were originally willing to spend.

However the French club have backed out of the race to sign the 6-cap Colombia international after finding themselves afoul of Financial Fair Play issues.

McCoist 2.0?

Steven Gerrard recently heaped praise on Morelos for his Europa League escapades for Rangers but insisted he cannot be compared to the Ibrox outfit's all-time leading goalscorer Ally McCoist.

While we aren't saying for one minute that Morelos is anywhere near the same level as McCoist, there are some obvious similarities that are worth mentioning.

Indeed, he came off the bench to bag a brace in the 5-0 second qualifying round win over Lincoln Red Imps, meaning he has now scored twenty goals in the tournament over the past three seasons.

Standing at 1.77m tall, the Colombian is cut from a similar cloth to McCoist.

The legendary Scotsman, who is slightly taller at 1.78m, was also famous for his confident style of play, as he scored 21 goals in 56 games in Europe.

Former Aberdeen footballer Noel Whelan suggested Morelos is showing Gerrard he is someone he can rely on. He said “it is very pleasing because sometimes you have seen that petulance in a player throughout the years but maybe he is repaying the loyalty that Steven has shown him."

In any event, the mere fact the Gers have managed to keep a hold of a striker who is very much still in his prime shows a massive statement of intent.

Rangers have been crying out for a proven goalscorer for quite some time and Morelos may be the unsung hero they need to close the gap on defending champions Celtic.
