An update has emerged on Glasgow Rangers and their attempts to bring in a new manager to Ibrox during the break for the 2022 World Cup...

What's the talk?

GOAL Brasil journalist Raisa Simplicio has claimed that the Gers are not throwing all of their eggs in one basket as Portuguese boss Luis Castro has emerged as an alternative contender for the role.

She tweeted:

"Luís Castro, from Botafogo, was contacted by Rangers, from Scotland. The technician is an option if the negotiation with Michael Beale does not go through."

The Daily Record have backed this up by claiming that Stewart Robertson and Ross Wilson have been eyeing up the 61-year-old manager, among others, alongside Beale.

Their report states that the Ibrox board have made a 'formal approach' for the English coach but that it is not a done deal and he could yet remain in the Championship, which would open the door for another tactician to take over in Glasgow.

Better than Beale

Steven Gerrard's former assistant at Ibrox is well known to the Rangers supporters, for his role as a coach at the club during the 2020/21 title-winning campaign, but that does not guarantee that he is the best man for the job.

He is currently in his first senior management job in charge of Queens Park Rangers in the English Championship and has hit a rough patch of form of late, with his side losing four of their last five matches and scoring once in that time.

The 42-year-old has won nine, drawn four, and lost eight of his 21 league games as a manager, which means that he is averaging 1.55 points per game.

Beale has not proven himself in the dugout at this early stage in his career and bringing him in would be a gamble by Rangers, as he has not shown that he can be the main man to lead a team to a title, or any trophy.

Whereas, Castro has been around the block and proven that he can manage a successful side. He won a Portuguese second division title with Porto B in the 2015/16 campaign and had the same team top of the division in the 2013/14 season after 32 matches before taking the senior job with the Liga Portugal giants before being able to finish the job.

The 61-year-old also had recent success in Ukraine with Shakhtar Donetsk as he won the Premier Liga title, winning 26 of his 32 league matches in charge during 2019/20.

He also finished second in the Qatar Stars League with Al-Duhail SC in 2021/22 as his team averaged 2.14 points per game across 22 outings, before he landed his current job with Botafogo.

Therefore, the Portuguese tactician could be a better fit for Rangers at this moment in time as he is a proven coach who has shown that he can compete at the top level, winning and challenging for titles, whilst Beale is in the infancy of his career and is an unknown quantity who has been a mixed bag in the Championship this season.
