Glasgow Rangers are ready to turn their backs on Jack Wilshere, if recent reports are to be believed...

What's the word?

According to Football Insider, Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has reached out to Wilshere, 28, about a possible move to Ibrox. Gerrard was reportedly hopeful that he could agree a deal with the free agent after he parted ways with West Ham earlier this month.

Reports in recent times had revealed that a move to Rangers "should not be ruled out." But the Light Blues will now back out of the race to sign the £4.32m-rated ace as he has hinted he prefers a move overseas instead amid interest from several MLS teams.

Inexcusable error?

The failure to sign the Arsenal academy graduate is already looking like a disaster from Rangers sporting director and board member Ross Wilson.

It wasn't all that long ago that Wilshere made 13 appearances in the Europa League in his last season at the Emirates, scoring a goal and supplying two assists, whilst he averaged 1.2 shots, 1.8 key passes and 3.2 dribbles per game, via WhoScored.

The former England international arguably played some of the best football of his career during the 2013/14 season, where he scored three goals and supplied four assists in the Premier League, whilst averaging 1.9 dribbles and 1.4 key passes per game, via WhoScored.

To put that into context, even Glen Kamara can't even complete one dribble per game in the Scottish Premiership this season, whilst Scott Arfield is only averaging fewer than one key pass per game in the Scottish top flight, and Joe Aribo has only recently returned from injury.

Once hailed as a "special" talent by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, Wilshere was named the PFA Young Player of the Year in 2011, beating competition from Gareth Bale and Javier Hernandez. If it weren't for his well-documented injury problems, former Barcelona midfielder Xavi believes "he would be one of the best midfield players in the world", which is high praise indeed.

You can't help but feel like Rangers would've been the perfect fit for Wilshere, especially when you consider the fact that Gerrard has been able to carefully manage the injury-prone Ryan Jack.

Gers fans had better hope that he isn't one that got away if he shines abroad. Staying fit would be a good start, but he has shown that he has been working on his fitness ahead of the next step in his career. For a free transfer, what a huge bargain that would have been.
