Glasgow Rangers may have romped to a 2-0 victory over Celtic but Steven Gerrard's side will not want to rest on their laurels for too long if recent reports are to be believed...

What's the word?

According to The Daily Express, Arsenal do not want to re-sign their former midfielder Jack Wilshere, a reported target for Rangers according to Italian journalist Nicolo Schira on Twitter, on a free transfer. He has been on the lookout for a new club ever since his contract with West Ham was terminated at the start of October.

However, the Gunners have no intention of offering him a new deal, which has paved the way for Ross Wilson to spring a surprise move. But Wilshere has insisted he can still contribute at the very top of the game, so the Rangers boss may have to act quickly before it is too late.

Iniesta 2.0?

This wouldn't be the first time that the Gers missed out on signing a midfield maestro. Former Rangers boss Alex McLeish revealed that the Ibrox outfit came close to signing Andres Iniesta from Barcelona after turning Mikel Arteta into a world-class talent but both clubs couldn't reach an agreement.

And obviously this came back to bite them as they were taught a lesson in the Champions League at the hands of Lionel Messi.

Iniesta's former teammate Xavi insisted Wilshere is an "incredible" talent with great vision who can find acres of space during open play. The Barcelona legend has backed Wilshere to become the best player in Scotland. He said: “I have had a lot of respect for Jack, for many years.

“He played an incredible game against Barcelona (in 2011) and after that I predicted he would go on to be one of the best midfield players in the world and the future of English football. That is a prediction that I am sure would have come true if it were not for some horrible injuries.

“Rangers could be a very good fit for him. The pace in Scotland is not as fast as England and it would give him more time on the ball. That is where he excels, his vision and passing is incredible.

“They are a big club with a young coach who knows what it takes to win at the very highest level."

Let's face it, it's hard to remember the last time Wilshere even played a game, let alone a full season. However, it's worth remembering that he played 13 games in the Europa League during his last season with the Gunners, and scored one goal and supplied two assists, whilst he averaged 1.2 shots, 1.8 key passes and 3.2 dribbles per game, via WhoScored.

In contrast, Ianis Hagi only managed 1.3 dribbles per game in the tournament last term.

Considering the fact that he is a free agent, it is certainly something that shouldn't be sniffed at. If anything, far from it. But his wages could prove to be a stumbling block, as he reportedly received wages worth £100,000-per-week while he was on the books at West Ham.

With that being said, it's highly likely Wilshere will need to lower his expectations, as he could be forced to accept a pay cut in order to resurrect his professional career. Whatever the case may be, Wilson has a tough decision on his hands.
