Glasgow Rangers continued their European struggles this season with yet another disappointing Champions League defeat.

The 2-0 loss to Liverpool last night leaves the Ibrox side at the bottom of group A and even securing third place in the group and landing in the safety net of the Europa League looks beyond them considering their three performances in the competition so far.

Rangers struggled with Liverpool’s high pressing tactic under the Anfield floodlights and it was reminiscent of the defeat against Celtic last month.

One player struggled more than most against Jurgen Klopp’s men, however, looking isolated in Rangers' attack.

Alfredo Morelos struggled

The Colombian cut a frustrating figure leading the line for the Ibrox side, getting barely any service, and lacking his usual bullying persona.

The 26-year-old lost a staggering 91% of his total duels in just 73 minutes on the pitch while taking just 27 touches in all, 25 less than Allan McGregor.

He lost possession 12 times, was dribbled past once, and completed just nine passes in what was one of his worst performances in a Rangers shirt.

This was reflected in his SofaScore rating of 6.2, giving him the joint lowest on the pitch, alongside Ryan Kent, Leon King, and James Tavernier.

Liverpool Echo correspondent Paul Gorst said that Morelos “barely had a kick” throughout the tie and it was an uncharacteristic performance on the highest stage for the player.

Of course, he is still coming back from an injury that ruled him out at the end of last season and is still getting his match fitness up to speed, but he showed against Hearts at the weekend his goalscoring instincts are still in check.

It was a woeful team performance and Giovanni van Bronckhorst won't be happy with how weak his side were, giving Jurgen Klopp’s men far too much room to manoeuvre and they played right into the Anfield side's hands.

A home tie against St Mirren is up next for the Light Blues and the Dutchman will be hoping his team, with Morelos in tow, will bounce right back with a victory.
