Rangers: Van Bronckhorst eyeing January move for Ben Jackson

Glasgow Rangers are keeping an eye on a 21-year-old Championship defender ahead of the January transfer window…

What’s the news?

That’s according to Football Insider, who claim that Rangers are keeping tabs on Huddersfield Town left-back Ben Jackson following his emergence into the first-team picture under Mark Fotheringham.

His contract runs until 2024 therefore a transfer fee would be required if Giovanni van Bronckhorst wishes to sign him in January, although there are a number of other clubs also making regular checks on his progress.

Borna Barisic heir?

Rangers already have the left back area well covered, with Barisic and Ridvan Yilmaz the two senior players for the position, while the likes of Johnly Yfeko and Kevin Ciubotaru are thriving in the academy.

However, Yilmaz has yet to settle at the club, making just seven appearances all season and Barisic is very much Jekyll and Hyde, a world-beater at his best, yet this seems to be few and far between, especially this season.

Jackson has impressed during his nine Championship outings this season, averaging a SofaScore rating of 6.81.

The 21-year-old poses a solid attacking threat, either from left-back or if played slightly further forward, chipping in with a goal while creating two big chances and averaging one key pass per match.

How many signings did Rangers make in the last summer window?

The youngster is confident defensively too, making 1.9 tackles and 1.4 clearances per game while also winning 54% of his total duels, showcasing his ever-growing maturity.

With the defender becoming a key fixture in the team recently, Fotheringham won’t be ready to sell him anytime soon, but the lure of European football at a packed Ibrox, plus the chance to win trophies must put the Light Blues as frontrunners in the battle for his signature.

With the Croatian left back recently turning 30, there will be discussions regarding his long-term future fairly soon and Rangers should be looking for replacements to fill his void.

Jackson may not be the finished article yet, but if the Dutchman can bring him to Ibrox in January for a respectable fee, it may be a wise piece of business in the long run.
