A major update has emerged regarding the future of Rangers centre-back Connor Goldson at Ibrox.

What's the talk?

Football Insider journalist Russell Edge has revealed that the 28-year-old has turned down the chance to sign a contract extension in Glasgow. The ex-Brighton defender's deal expires at the end of the season and he now appears set to see it out before searching for a Premier League move.

Speaking on the Football Insider Facebook page, via This is Futbol, Edge said: “We understand here at Football Insider that Goldson has rejected a new contract offer from Rangers and is looking at a potential Premier League return. The 28-year-old’s future is now very firmly up in the air with his deal running out at the end of the season.

"And as I say, Ibrox sources have told us that Goldson has knocked back Rangers’ offer of an extension amid interest from south of the border.

“The hope was at Rangers that he would sign a contract extension before January, but unfortunately for Rangers, hope among the club hierarchy that he would sign an extension has evaporated in recent months.”

Fans will be fuming

Rangers fans will surely be left fuming by this update as it has left the club in a difficult position heading into the January transfer window. They must now deal with a valuable asset who could leave on a free transfer at the end of the season and decide whether or not they want to cash in on him whilst they still can or allow him to depart for nothing.

Goldson is valued at £6.75m by Transfermarkt and has proven his quality in the Premiership, which is why he is a valuable player for the Ibrox club. He has averaged an excellent WhoScored rating of 7.03 this term, having averaged a score of 7.38 in the title-winning campaign last season.

This shows that he is able to perform consistently to a high level for the Gers by putting in strong displays at centre-back in the league. Therefore, his departure would surely be an on-pitch blow for Giovanni van Bronckhorst, leaving him and Ross Wilson scrambling to find a replacement in the market or from the academy setup.

Supporters would also be livid because it means that they will be watching a player pull on the shirt each week despite them knowing that he does not want to be there. Goldson is seemingly determined to return to England and depart Ibrox, which could leave fans wondering just how committed he is to giving his all for the Gers in the coming months.
