Rangers: Giovanni van Bronckhorst must axe John Lundstram today

Rangers are back in action at Ibrox today after an important win on the road in the Premiership in midweek.

As things currently stand, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side have the chance to once again go level with their Glasgow rivals at the top of the table if they manage to win today, with the current leaders not in action until tomorrow.

In terms of who the 47-year-old could pick in his starting XI on this occasion, one man who featured in midweek but we feel should not be in the team from the beginning this afternoon is John Lundstram.

Who did Rangers beat in their first game of 2021?

Lundstram hasn’t been good enough

Since arriving at Ibrox from Sheffield United last summer, the 28-year-old has made 33 appearances across all competitions.

In his 21 league appearances for Rangers, the Englishman has earned a modest overall performance rating of 6.75/10 from WhoScored, making him one of the lowest-rated outfield players in the squad have started more than two league games.

Indeed, former Premiership striker Tam McManus stated earlier in the season that Lundstram has been “struggling” for the Light Blues, and it’s a comment with some justification.

While he may only be in the middle of his first season at the club, this suggests that he may not be good enough to be a standout performer for the Gers on a consistent basis. His performance in the win against St Johnstone on Wednesday didn’t do much for his chances of keeping his place in the team this time around either.

Should Gio drop John Lundstram this afternoon?

Throughout the 90 minutes in Perth, the £22k-p/w midfielder had just one shot at goal (which was off target), along with losing possession of the ball 16 times and losing seven of his 13 duels. That display earned the figure an overall match rating of 6.9/10, making him the joint-second lowest rated player in a Rangers shirt on the night according to SofaScore.

Taking all this into account, perhaps it could be in the Gers’ best interest if Van Bronckhorst takes Lundstram out of the team to play Aberdeen today rather than risk seeing him put in another underwhelming performance and potentially hindering his team’s chances of victory.

In other news: Van Bronckhorst can seal Rangers masterclass with “unbelievable” £6.5k-p/w gem, he’s a “class act”…
