Rangers: Ryan Jack injury setback could benefit Charlie McCann

Glasgow Rangers got back on track on Sunday following their European humiliation last week, defeating Motherwell 2-1 in what was a scrappy, drab performance that will do Giovanni van Bronckhorst absolutely no favours with the ravenous Ibrox faithful.

The Dutchman hasn’t been helped with injuries, with the likes of Filip Helander, Kemar Roofe and Ianis Hagi still on the treatment table, while Connor Goldson and Ryan Jack had to come off against Liverpool after sustaining injuries and they will both be out for a long period of time.

Van Bronckhorst should now use this setback to Jack as an incentive to blood a youngster into the starting XI, especially with the quality that he possesses.

A chance for McCann?

Rangers signed McCann in the 2021 summer transfer window from Manchester United and he went straight into the B team.

It wasn’t long before he appeared for the first team, with brief cameos in the Scottish Cup and Premiership last season offering Van Bronckhorst a glimpse of his talent.

McCann made his first start against Dundee United last month and suitably impressed, making two key passes while having a solid pass success rate of 84%, and despite his tender age of 20, he has all the qualities to command a regular place in the club’s midfield.

Due to sharing the same position and nationality as Ibrox legend Steven Davis, many thought he could be the ideal heir to the 37-year-old, however, with Jack now out injured, McCann can push further up the first-team hierarchy.

How many signings did Rangers make in the last summer window?

His performance against Dundee United led former Gers frontman, Kenny Miller, to describe him as a “really good technical player, really intelligent footballer.” And this is praise the youngster must use as further motivation.

With both Jack and Davis out of contract at the end of the current season, Van Bronckhorst – if he is still in charge – will save the club millions in transfer fees by utilising the talents of the Northern Irishman, especially if he continues to develop through the course of the season.
