Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst could be set to receive a timely injury boost, amid an update regarding the fitness of defender, Connor Goldson.

What's the word?

According to pundit Kenny Miller, via Football Scotland, the 29-year-old could be in line to make a return to action once the current World Cup break is at an end, albeit with summer signing Tom Lawrence set to remain restricted to the sidelines.

The ex-Gers striker stated: "You've got the injuries that you've got and you might get a few of them back after the World Cup break. What I would say on recruitment is, is that Tom Lawrence was a good signing at the start.

"He's injured but I don't think he'll be back for Rangers after the break. Connor Goldson might be, and he'll be a big player for them, but they need to start seeing a better level of performance."

Goldson - who made the move to Ibrox back in 2018 - has been out of action since limping off during the early stages of the eventual 7-1 defeat at the hands of Liverpool back in October, having sustained a thigh injury.

It could save Van Bronckhorst's job

The Old Firm giants are currently in the midst of something of an injury crisis, with the aforementioned Van Bronckhorst having seen his squad depleted in recent weeks, particularly in the defensive ranks.

The centre-back pair of John Souttar and Filip Helander have been long-term absentees for the Scottish Premiership side, with former Anfield flop Ben Davies having seen his involvement somewhat limited due to fitness issues.

Promising youngster Leon King also suffered a blow to the head during last week's draw away to St Mirren, with the 18-year-old having perhaps already been overexposed amid the lack of fit alternatives in the defensive unit.

As such, it will be a real boost as far as Van Bronckhorst is concerned if Goldson is fit to return to action at the end of next month, with the former Feyenoord boss in need of all the help he can get amid the club's current rut.

The manager is under serious pressure to keep his job with the Light Blues finding themselves nine points off leaders Celtic following a miserable run of form in recent weeks, having notably been held by the Buddies last time out, while also slipping up away to St Johnstone a week earlier.

The Glasgow side had won seven of their opening nine top-flight games with the experienced centre-back in the side, although have now won just three of their six games without the former Brighton and Hove Albion colossus, showcasing just what an impact the Englishman makes to the team.

It will now be an anxious wait to see if the £37k-per-week titan - who has been described as one of the "pillars" of the team by his manager - can make his return later this year, with neither Van Bronckhorst nor Rangers as a whole able to afford any more slip-ups. Indeed, the defender's return post-World Cup could just keep him in the job.
