Rangers sealed dream deal for Ianis Hagi

Rangers progressed through to the knockout stages of the Europa League at Ibrox on Thursday night as Giovanni van Bronckhorst won his first game in charge of the Glasgow giants.

Alfredo Morelos scored both goals for the Gers against Sparta Prague to clinch their qualification from the group, whilst they also sit top of the Premiership table after 13 games.

The club’s success on the pitch in Europe and domestically could be placed down to the excellent work done in the transfer market in recent years, with the likes of Morelos, Ryan Kent and Glen Kamara coming in.

Dream deal

One player for whom the club secured a dream deal was midfield talent Ianis Hagi. The Gers brought him to the club from Genk for a reported £4m in 2020 after an initial loan spell from the Belgian side and he has gone from strength to strength in Scotland.

Has Hagi been a great signing?

He played a key role in the win over Sparta as he created an eye-catching four chances for his teammates and set up Morelos’ first goal with an instinctive sliding pass across the box. This means that he has one goal and one assist in two Europa League group stage games this season, highlighting his influence at the top end of the pitch.

His former manager Steven Gerrard previously dubbed him an “outstanding talent“, and his form in the Premiership last term was deserving of such high praise. In the 2020/21 campaign, he racked up seven goals and 11 assists in 23 starts, averaging a SofaScore rating of 7.02.

This shows that he has the quality to be a match-winner on a regular basis for the Gers as he can make telling contributions in the final third of the pitch. He has proven that he can deliver end product when he gets into advanced positions, as shown by his statistics in the title-winning season.

How well do you know Morelos? First... who did he score his 100th goal against?

In total, the Romanian has 35 goal contributions in 76 matches for the club – 14 goals and 21 assists – and at the time of writing (26/11/21), Transfermarkt value him at £5.85m. This shows that his value has increased since his £4m move to Ibrox, and he could end up making the club a healthy profit further down the line.

At the age of 23, Hagi has plenty more development left in him, and Van Bronckhorst could potentially help him progress to the next level. This means that his value could continue to soar and he may be worth significantly more than £4m in a season or two, which is why the club sealed a dream deal in 2020.
