Reported Rangers target Jonson Clarke-Harris has been tipped, by Kevin Phillips, to join Steven Gerrard's side at Ibrox this summer, rather than staying with Championship-bound Peterborough United.

It was claimed by Football Insider in March that Rangers scouts were in attendance at London Road Stadium earlier in the season to watch Clarke-Harris play against Accrington Stanley, and they will have undoubtedly been impressed, as he scored a hattrick in a 7-0 win.

The former Bristol Rovers man fired the Posh to promotion this season, hitting 31 goals in League One which saw him win the Player of the Season award for his performances, whilst the Golden Boot will surely follow unless his closest rival Charlie Wyke can hit six or more goals in the playoffs.

Peterborough will not be short of cash following the sale of Ivan Toney to Brentford last summer and will be desperate to keep hold of their star man ahead of their season back in England's second tier, which suggests that a move to Rangers was potentially unlikely.

However, speaking to Football Insider recently, Phillips has claimed that Clarke-Harris would favour a move to Ibrox ahead of next season, saying:

“My opinion is if he gets the chance to go to Rangers from the Championship, you don’t turn that down.

“It’s different if you have just been promoted to the Premier League because I’d say the player would stay there.

“But he’s got that chance to go to Rangers and play European football. He’s coming off the back of a brilliant season and he’s only going to get better.

“I’m sure Peterborough fans don’t want to hear that but he’s 26, is that big move going to come around again?

“It’s a tough decision for him but it’s also tough to turn down.”

If Phillips' claim comes to fruition and Clarke-Harris does favour a move to Rangers this summer, then perhaps Ross Wilson could negotiate a deal for the "fantastic" forward.

Certainly, it would be a big boost for Gerrard to have a natural goalscorer such as Clarke-Harris in his side, and the 26-year-old could definitely be the man to step up to replace Jermain Defoe should he depart Ibrox at the end of this month when his contract expires.

It will be interesting to see if the Englishman does ask to leave Peterborough this summer. If he does, Rangers must be at the front of the queue to snap him up. Gerrard would surely love to have him and it would be a huge boost to replace the aging Defoe with such a talented goalscorer.
