Glasgow Rangers have received a double injury boost ahead of their penultimate Champions League tie this evening.

The Ibrox side take on Serie A leaders Napoli in what is a must-win match if they wish to claim third place in the group and qualify for the Europa League knockout stages, and Giovanni van Bronckhorst delivered some positive injury news in his pre-match press conference yesterday, saying:

“Matondo is fit after a small injury at the weekend and has travelled with us. Leon King is better, he was feeling sick on Saturday at half-time and had to come off.”

This is fantastic news for the Dutchman, with Rangers missing a host of first-team players such as Tom Lawrence, Connor Goldson, and Ryan Jack for the tie.

King has been excellent since stepping up to the starting XI, showing maturity beyond his years and this elite experience will only benefit him going forward.

Former Gers manager Alex McLeish thought King was “calm and composed” after his first Champions League start against Liverpool at Anfield and with Ben Davies the only other fit natural centre-back in the squad, having the 18-year-old available is crucial for Van Bronckhorst.

Rabbi Matondo has been more hit-and-miss since arriving in the summer. The winger has started just five Premiership matches so far, however, he has registered three assists, created three big chances and played 1.1 key passes per game, showing glimpses of quality.

With the current injury crisis enveloping the squad, having two first-team players available for the crucial tie against the Italian side will be a big boost for the club’s ambitions.

However, with Napoli sitting top of Serie A having scored 26 goals in 11 matches, the Ibrox side face a daunting task, with the atmosphere at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium sure to be intimidating, and any sort of positive result will be an impressive feat.
