A major Rangers claim has emerged on the Ibrox giants' potential participation in the Sydney Super Cup...

What's the talk?

talkSPORT journalist Jim White has claimed that the competition in which Gio van Bronckhorst's Gers and their arch-rivals are due to be competing later this year is now in huge doubt.

Speaking on talkSPORT [21/02/22, 12:39pm], via Rangers News, White said: “The intelligence I’m getting on this one is that now the organisers are thinking [it’s too much like hard work], yeah.

“There could well be a reason of timing, there might be some other reason but they might throw it into the mix that it seems as if it may not be taking place.”

This comes after Australian reporter Jason Pine stated that the "launch may have been premature" and the tournament is now in "serious doubt."

Ecstatic

Rangers fans will surely be ecstatic with this news, as it suggests that the tournament will not be going ahead as planned and, in turn, they will not be playing Celtic in a 'friendly' match.

Many Gers supporters made their feelings on the competition clear on Sunday during the club's 2-1 Premiership win over Dundee as they protested ahead of kick-off for the first and second halves.

The Athletic's Jordan Campbell tweeted on the day: "Game delayed at kick off, and now again for another three minutes, after Rangers fans protest the Australia friendly by throwing ticker tape onto the pitch. A banner reading ‘You’ll jump into bed with Glasgow Celtic’"

He followed that up by claiming that tennis balls were being launched onto the pitch as some supporters began singing a lewd chant in relation to the Super Cup.

The protests continued at the start of the second half as Allan McGregor's goal was assaulted by a barrage of toilet paper and tennis balls, leaving the goalkeeper and Connor Goldson "visibly frustrated".

This illustrates the supporters' displeasure at the club's involvement in the Sydney Super Cup and suggests that they will now be buzzing to read that it is now in major doubt. They seemingly want Rangers to pull out of the tournament and the Ibrox giants may now be forced to do so, with the competition potentially not going ahead.

Whilst there has been no official confirmation on the Cup's status, these latest reports do not sound promising for its staging, and this is certainly a situation worth keeping an eye on over the coming weeks.
