Rangers pulled off “steal” with deal for Glen Kamara

Glasgow Rangers have enjoyed their fair share of success in recent years as they have begun to challenge for trophies at the top level again.

They ended their long wait for a Premiership title as Steven Gerrard led the Light Blues to glory in the 2020/21 campaign, going unbeaten in the process.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst arrived at Ibrox to take over from the former Liverpool man partway into last season and he failed to retain the league title.

However, he did win the SFA Cup and lead the Gers to the final of the Europa League – only to lose to Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties.

Part of their success over the last few years has been down to some shrewd work in the transfer market as they have picked up a number of bargains.

One player the club played a blinder with by signing was central midfielder Glen Kamara as he joined from Dundee FC for a fee in the region of just £50k in January 2019.

Was the signing of Kamara a steal?

Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield described the deal as the “steal of the century” back in 2019 and the former Arsenal youth prospect has lived up to that in the subsequent three years.

The 5 foot 11 gem, who was once tipped to be a “monster” by Gerrard, has amassed 168 competitive appearances for the Light Blues and chipped in with eight goals and 11 assists from midfield.

He played 33 times in 2020/21 Premiership-winning campaign and featured in all 14 of their Europa League matches in the run to the final last term, which shows how important he has been to the team in recent years.

What nationality does Mateusz Zukowski represent?

Neil McCann, his former manager at Dundee, previously heaped praise on the Finland international, saying: “He isn’t a big, physical lad but he’s made of iron and really strong. I knew immediately that he could handle the ball under pressure and not give it away, so he was perfect.”

At the time of writing (19/09/22), Transfermarkt value Kamara at £6.75m. This is a staggering 13,400% increase on the £50k they initially paid to sign him from Dundee three years ago, which is a phenomenal rise in a relatively short amount of time and this shows that the deal to bring him to Ibrox was certainly a steal.

His value has skyrocketed since moving to Glasgow and he has been a key player, given his appearances, for both Gerrard and van Bronckhorst during his time at Rangers.

Hopefully, he can continue to increase his market price by providing value on the pitch throughout the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign, domestically and in Europe.
