Rangers must launch £4m bid for Daniel Johnson before it is too late

Glasgow Rangers are gearing up to make some last-minute high profile signings if recent reports are to be believed.

Rumoured Rangers target Daniel Johnson was left out of Preston North End’s matchday squad on Sunday afternoon altogether with the transfer window set to close later today.

What’s the word?

Rangers have been trying to sign the former Jamaica international midfielder for quite some time but appear to be no further forward.

According to The Sun, Deepdale boss Alex Neil insists Johnson won’t be joining Steven Gerrard’s side as it stands.

The former Hamilton player-manager told the outlet “not at this moment in time, but you can never say never in football.”

Is Daniel Johnson the perfect fit for Rangers?

Yes

Yes

No

No

However, as we all know, a lot can change between now and the end of the window, so Gers fans will have to wait and see if Ross Wilson will be able to get his man.

Bye-Bye Kennedy?

The Glasgow giants have submitted several bids for the Jamaican but these have all been rebuffed by Preston who are refusing to sell him for anything less than £4m, via Football Insider.

It is evident for all to see that Kai Kennedy isn’t a part of Gerrard’s plans this season, as he seems set to head to the Highlands on loan for the first half of the season, which will leave the Rangers boss short of attacking options in the midfield.

In all honesty, we haven’t really seen enough of Kennedy to form a conclusive judgement, but even so, replacing him with Johnson could be a shrewd move from Wilson.

Last season, the 27-year-old scored 12 goals and supplied 7 assists in 33 games whilst averaging 1.3 shots and 1.4 key passes per game, via WhoScored.

To put that into context, not even Ianis Hagi could score a similar amount of goals last term, whilst only Ryan Kent managed to complete more passes per game.

Who was top scorer during the 2018/19 season?

While Johnson has been out for several weeks with a groin injury, Preston’s matchday preview seemed to imply he was ready to return to the starting lineup.

His former teammate Chris Humphrey once claimed he is “one of the best” in the number ten position, telling reporters “his all-round game is phenomenal”, which is high praise indeed.

If the Ibrox outfit want to close the gap on Celtic sooner rather than later, then this is a signing they simply cannot afford to slip through their fingers.
