Following Rangers’ exit from the Champions League earlier this month, it was perhaps always likely that links would re-emerge for top talents such as Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent, but it seems as if Steven Gerrard has a good chance of keeping the latter at Ibrox.
Leeds United have been touted as the main suitors for Kent in recent seasons, with suggestions that they could revisit their interest following Rangers’ disappointing 4-2 aggregate defeat against Malmo in the Champions League.
However, The Athletic’s Phil Hay, who covers Leeds United, has suggested that a move for the 24-year-old is not currently on the cards, as he suggested on his podcast that:
“Our Rangers writer Jordan Campbell thinks they will sell now and they will sell players to try and get money in, minus their Champions League earnings.
“Kent is an obvious one to go. The one thing Leeds won’t do is meet Rangers’ valuation, which is about £20m.”
Whilst Rangers fans won’t be happy to hear that Campbell is tipping players to leave this summer, they will surely be delighted to hear that Leeds won’t meet Rangers’ valuation for Kent, which suggests that he is unlikely to leave given how much Gerrard values him at Ibrox.
Paul Robinson was full of praise for the former Liverpool man in 2019, saying:
“He’s the modern-day footballer as he can play in a lot of positions, he is very comfortable with the ball at his feet, and his pass accuracy is outstanding and as I’ve said before if Steven can keep hold of him, he’ll be a very good asset in the years to come.”
The Englishman has established himself as a key player in Gerrard’s squad in recent seasons, with 27 goals and 29 assists to his name in 132 appearances for the Teddy Bears.
Therefore, Rangers fans will be desperate to keep him at Ibrox for another season at least, as the Gers look to defend their Premiership title, and will surely be happy to hear that Leeds won’t meet his asking price this summer.
And, in other news… Gerrard could be set for huge potential Rangers blow with “terrific” gem
