Rangers have been handed a key injury boost over the availability of Ibrox beast Leon Balogun...

What's the latest?

Gers boss Gio van Bronckhorst has revealed that the Nigeria international will be able to feature against Celtic on Wednesday.

He told the club's official Twitter account: "Ramsey trained but is too soon for tomorrow, I expect him in the squad in the near future. Helander is still out and should be back in the coming weeks. Balogun is back fit and available."

Delight

The Dutch head coach will surely be delighted with this news ahead of the Old Firm clash as Balogun could step back into the XI after a shaky defensive display against Ross County.

Whilst Calvin Bassey has been in impressive form since making the switch to centre-back after Steven Gerrard's departure, his inexperience showed in the 3-3 draw. His key error, completely missing the ball after a header from Connor Goldson, allowed the home side to take a 2-1 lead in the match and he could be taken out of the firing line in this huge top-of-the-table clash.

Balogun is an experienced player and is proven at Premiership level, which could make him the ideal candidate to replace his compatriot at the heart of the defence. In the league this season, he has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.05 for the Gers, winning 64% of his duels and making 3.2 tackles and interceptions per game.

This comes after he averaged a score of 7.13 in the division last term as Rangers won the title, playing 19 times for Gerrard. He has shown that he can perform consistently to a high level over a prolonged period of time, which is why van Bronckhorst could have faith that he will be able to come straight in and have an impact against Celtic.

Bassey, meanwhile, has averaged a score of 6.97 in the league so far this season. This suggests that Balogun could be the superior option out of the two and his return could be a big boost to the side ahead of this clash at the top of the table.

Therefore, the ex-Feyenoord head coach will be buzzing with the Nigerian's availability. He will be delighted to have the choice to call upon him on Wednesday and it will be interesting to see whether or not he decides to hand him a start.
