Glasgow Rangers slipped to yet another defeat, their third in succession, with Napoli defeating them 3-0 at Ibrox in their second Champions League group stage encounter.

Following two 4-0 thrashings in the space of a week, the Gers were looking to stop the rot and claim a positive result against the Serie A leaders and open up group A, where a win for Rangers would see all four teams level on three points each.

A bright first half from the home side, with Alfredo Morelos and Scott Arfield both going close with efforts, and the defence preventing any goals, although Napoli’s Piotr Zielinski hit the post, the teams went into the interval level, and with the game very much there for the taking.

the second half descended into chaos for the home side, with three penalties being taken by Napoli in 45 minutes.

James Sands conceded the first one and received a second yellow card, leaving Rangers down to ten men. Allan McGregor saved from Piotr Zielinski before Matteo Politano scored from the rebound, however, due to the scorer's encroachment, it was retaken, with the 40-year-old saving yet again to deny the Italians.

Borna Barisic handled in the box not long after, and this time Politano scored, with further goals from Giacomo Raspadori and Tanguy Ndombele securing all three points for the visiting team.

McGregor was Van Bronckhorst’s only bright spark

The result could have been worse if it hadn’t been for the “terrific” goalkeeper, with two penalty saves and he could count himself unlucky to let in the third effort from Politano.

The goalkeeper had more touches (44) than five of the sides outfield players, showing that he was looked at to distribute the ball well during the contest.

With regular keeper Jon McLaughlin injured before tonight’s clash and having conceded eight in his previous two matches, having the Light Blues icon between the posts was a positive, and it could have been worse had the 35-year-old been fit to play.

McGregor made seven saves during the tie, with five coming from inside the box, proving his shot-stopping abilities are still in order despite approaching 41.

His performance will certainly do his chances no damage going forward, and with the result leaving the Dutchman under pressure, a win against Dundee United is vital on Saturday.
