New Glasgow Rangers manager Michael Beale will be looking for vast improvement from the Ibrox side over the coming months.

Poor form before the World Cup break meant the club fell nine points adrift of Celtic in the Premiership title race while exciting at the Champions League group stage.

With Beale expected to give young players a chance in the team, this will give the likes of Alex Lowry, Adam Devine, and Zak Lovelace a confidence boost, while also making sure the first-team players don’t rest on their laurels.

Alfredo Morelos – who has scored just three goals this season – has been one of the first team players that have underperformed this season and with his contract expiring at the end of the campaign, Beale might be eyeing up a replacement.

The 42-year-old may just have the perfect heir, with 20-year-old academy prospect Juan Alegria already in the ideal mould as Morelos. They both hail from Colombia and offer a similar playing style, excellent finishers of the ball but can also drop deep and link up play well when required.

Alegria is currently out on loan at Falkirk, where he has impressed this season, scoring five goals and providing two assists, proving he can score goals at senior level.

He struggled during a loan spell at Partick Thistle last season, failing to score, however it was his first taste of senior football in Scotland and the experience has obviously helped him improve his development.

Former Rangers right-back Alan Hutton even dubbed the youngster a “big talent” and from someone who emerged through the Ibrox youth ranks to eventually seal a move to Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, he clearly knows what he is talking about.

Morelos won't be at Rangers forever, and unless he improves his performances, the next few months could be the last the Ibrox faithful see of him in Glasgow. Beale shouldn’t be worried about signing a multimillion-pound replacement, however, as Alegria awaits the chance to impress the new manager and fight for a spot in the first team.
