Rangers: Cantwell could be Michael Beale’s dream signing

Glasgow Rangers are leading the chase to sign Todd Cantwell this month as Michael Beale looks to strengthen his squad.

What’s the news?

According to Sky Sports, the Ibrox club are leading the chase for the 24-year-old after holding positive talks with the player, and Beale will be determined to add him to his first-team squad.

Rangers have yet to submit an official bid for the Norwich City ace, and with his contract due to expire at the end of the season, the English Championship club could be prepared to accept a lower offer as opposed to letting him leave for free in the summer.

Cantwell reportedly prefers a move to Ibrox, and the next few days could be crucial.

He could be Beale’s dream signing

Beale may face something of a midfield dilemma over the next six months, with the likes of Ryan Jack, Steven Davis and Scott Arfield out of contract in June and loan signings James Sands and Malik Tillman – barring any permanent moves – set to return to their parent clubs, so there could be a big void to fill in the first-team squad at Rangers.

Therefore, signing Cantwell this month would be a dream move for Beale, as he could give the midfielder time to bed into the squad while also utilising his qualities during the second half of the campaign.

The Englishman isn’t having the best of seasons for Norwich, starting just nine Championship matches, and perhaps a fresh start would revitalise his game.

He does have what it takes to shine at the highest level, scoring six goals during the 2019/20 Premier League campaign for Norwich. He also made 0.9 key passes and 1.4 tackles per match and succeeded with 63% of his dribbles in that season, demonstrating just how effective he was at both ends of the pitch for a team who were relegated.

How many signings did Rangers make in the last summer window?

His former manager Daniel Farke was full of praise for the midfielder during their time together at Carrow Road, saying: “He trains unbelievably hard and in an outstanding way.”

Beale could certainly bring the best out of the player, and his 4-3-1-2 system should be perfect for Cantwell’s playmaking abilities. Therefore, it could be a dream January signing for the 42-year-old, and the next few days should hopefully see some progress made regarding any potential move.
