Rangers must unleash Antonio Colak vs Dundee Utd

Glasgow Rangers face arguably their most important match of the season against Dundee United in today’s Scottish Premiership clash.

A few weeks ago this statement would have sounded extremely far-fetched, but following the recent performances and results, a win is a requirement.

How many signings did Rangers make in the last summer window?

Three successive losses, 11 goals conceded and zero scored, a high-scoring win would certainly boost the confidence and give the Ibrox faithful something to smile about before the international break halts any momentum.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst will surely make changes ahead of this afternoon’s tie, and Antonio Colak should be unleashed considering his excellent record so far this season.

On the Chalkboard

With the club relying heavily on Alfredo Morelos recently, signing a striker was a main priority in the summer and the Dutchman delivered when Colak joined in a £1.8m deal, considering he had scored 133 goals in his career to date, it looked like a bargain.

The Croatian hitman was expected to hit the ground running due to the injury suffered by Morelos last season that had halted his pre-season preparations and it didn’t take him long.

In only his third match for the Ibrox side, he scored against Kilmarnock and this proved to be the catalyst as the 28-year-old embarked on a scoring spree, netting six goals in his next six matches.

His most important strike (or tap-in) was against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League playoff round. The two teams had drawn 2-2 in the first leg at Ibrox and not many had given the Light Blues a chance against the Dutch heavyweights.

With half an hour to go, Malik Tillman stole the ball from a PSV defender and squared it to Colak who duly stroked it into an empty net, becoming a “hero” in the process and sealing the club’s first participation in the group stages for 12 years.

Will Colak start for Rangers today?

No

With Morelos still struggling with his match fitness and having played the majority of the game against Napoli, Van Bronckhorst should start Colak against United.

Chances might be few and far between for a United side who have improved since sacking Jack Ross following a 7-0 and 9-0 defeat in the space of 17 days, but Colak could certainly make the “difference” in today’s tie.
