Now, Football Insider claim that Steven Gerrard's side remain interested in luring him to Ibrox in this transfer window, but that Newcastle may not let him go until closer to the October deadline.

The report suggests that the Magpies want to strengthen their squad before they let the £40k-a-week ace go, although they would be prepared to sell him on a permanent basis rather than just another season-long loan deal as originally thought.

It's claimed the Tyneside club would demand around £3m for that to happen as Murphy has now entered the final year of his contract at St James' Park.

Having played regular football at Championship level and impressed, Murphy could be a shrewd addition for Gerrard's side as they look to stop Celtic winning the title once again.

The winger's former teammate at Newcastle once said: "He has great ability, he’s a really good lad who works hard and again, like a lot of our players, he’s young and he’s learning the game at the highest level."

He may not have fully realised his potential, but Murphy still has plenty to offer at still only 25.
