Rangers should ruthlessly ditch Ryan Kent

Glasgow Rangers were defeated 3-0 on Wednesday night in the Champions League, albeit by a team in scintillating form.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Ibrox giants were taught a lesson by a Napoli side who are thriving this season, sitting top of the Serie A table and scoring 20 goals in Europe already.

It was perhaps no surprise that the Gers succumbed to defeat in Italy, but the lack of intensity and desire to take the game to the Azzurri are things which can’t be forgiven easily.

Van Bronckhorst has had a fair share of players not pulling their weight this season, with Ryan Kent arguably being the key protagonist, especially against Napoli, and he should be benched for today’s Premiership clash against Aberdeen.

This season, Kent has scored just once and registered five assists; and despite that maybe looking like a solid return, the winger has flattered to deceive with his performances, often looking uninterested during matches.

His Champions League displays have been poor, with the winger receiving a SofaScore rating of just 6.28 in five games, taking 37.2 touches and making only 0.4 key passes per match.

The 25-year-old has come under criticism recently, with Kris Boyd admitting on Sky Sports that Van Bronckhorst should be seeing better displays from the player.

The former Ibrox striker said of Kent: “Rangers do need more from him, he needs to do more for himself. In the contract situation, it’s one where you can look at it and say, has he spoken to somebody are there other things there.

“Even if you have and your future’s away from Rangers, then you’ve got to be doing better to show them that you’re ready to come to you, whether it’s in January or next summer.”

How many signings did Rangers make in the last summer window?

Kent’s £18k-per-week contract expires at the end of this season, and as time passes without any further updates on his current situation, it appears increasingly likely that the player may be looking to move on from Ibrox.

This would have represented a massive loss to the Light Blues if it were a year or two ago, but judging by his performances in this campaign, some of the Rangers faithful might not even blink an eyelid if the winger exits the club.
