Rangers have made some shrewd moves in the transfer window in recent years, with Aaron Ramsey potentially joining the likes of Ryan Kent, Joe Aribo and Connor Goldson as one of their best acquisitions in the modern era.

However, one player the club have suffered a transfer shocker over is centre-forward Kemar Roofe. The striker has not been able to kick on and prove his worth as serious competition for Alfredo Morelos' place in the starting XI.

He has started seven Premiership matches this season and scored twice from those matches, with both of the goals coming from the penalty spot. This shows that he has been unable to deliver excellent performances when selected in from the start as he has not scored a single goal from open play after being named in the XI this term.

Roofe joined the side from Belgian outfit Anderlecht ahead of the 2020/21 campaign. The Daily Mail reported the deal to be worth £4m at the time, whilst Transfermarkt valued him at £4.05m - suggesting that the club paid a fair price for him in 2020, but his form in the current campaign has brought the deal into question.

Transfermarkt valued him at a whopping £5.4m in January 2021 as he was in the middle of a season he ended up scoring 14 Premiership goals in. However, 12 months and zero open play goals in the 2021/22 campaign later and he is valued at £3.6m, which is a 33% decrease in the space of one year. This shows that his stock is dropping, despite him being in his prime years at 29, as he has not been able to produce consistent quality for the Gers.

Ex-Gers manager Steven Gerrard once heaped praise on his work rate. He said:

“Touch wood he stays fit and if he does then he will be a real handful at this level. He works his socks off, he does everything out of possession that you ask of him, he is clever and bright and he can create and score. He has got the mentality that I really like.”

This shows that he is a useful player for the club as he puts in 110% for the team every time he plays. However, that is not enough to justify the price tag and his subsequent drop in value.

He is reportedly on £26k-per-week at Ibrox, which is listed as the third-highest at the club behind Connor Goldson and Alfredo Morelos. Rangers are, therefore, having a shocker with Roofe as they have a seemingly overpaid player with a decreasing transfer value being used as a substitute player as he has proven himself to be underwhelming when named in the starting XI.
