Glasgow Rangers have found their new manager in Mick Beale, with Ross Wilson acting swiftly to make sure the Ibrox side head into their first domestic fixture after the World Cup break fully prepared.

The 42-year-old has previous history with the club as first-team coach under Steven Gerrard between 2018 to 2021, however, this reputation will only get him so far, as he will be judged on results and results alone.

The Light Blues find themselves nine points adrift of Premiership leaders Celtic, and although catching them seems unlikely, the January transfer window could come to Beale’s rescue.

Incomings will be useful, however, there are a few players who either haven’t contributed as well as they could have or should have been let go in the summer.

Steven Davis is one of those players, with the 37-year-old simply not having the legs for the fight anymore, and Giovanni van Bronckhorst made a mistake by giving him a one year extension.

The Northern Irishman has started just three league matches all season, contributing with just 0.4 key passes per match, winning possession back 0.1 times and chipping in with a goal.

His Champions League performances have also been extremely underwhelming, averaging a SofaScore rating of just 6.58/10, 27.4 touches per match and making only 0.2 key passes each game, proving that his influence at the highest level is waning.

Daily Mail journalist Calum McClurkin took to Twitter to voice his criticism of the Rangers midfielder following the 3-1 defeat to Ajax, saying: "Steven Davis towing a caravan in midfield. Just too over the hill at this level. Patched-up defence simply can’t cope. Rangers decimated with injuries but the summer transfer window has left them woefully ill-equipped for Champions League group stage football."

He has been an excellent servant for the club, winning a raft of honours during his two stints in Glasgow, however, the sentiment shown by the Dutchman at the end of last season has clearly held the team back.

Keeping Davis meant not reinvesting in young talent, while the likes of Alex Lowry and Charlie McCann – who are already at the club – haven’t received as many opportunities due to the presence of Davis and Scott Arfield.

Beale will need to be ruthless and have a mass clearout in January in order to take the club to a new era, full of youngsters who can make their mark on the team.
