In a recent interview with Football FanCast, former Rangers striker Frank McAvennie has claimed that Alfredo Morelos is irreplaceable in Steven Gerrard’s side and that no Rangers fan would want to see him leave Ibrox in the summer.
The Colombian international has proved to be an inspired signing by the Gers, as since joining from HJK Helsinki in 2017, the striker has gone on to contribute 93 goals and 42 assists in 172 appearances for the Ibrox outfit.
It is no surprise, therefore, that ‘El Bufalo’ has attracted interest from elsewhere, with French side Lille having come close to signing him last summer, and following the title win this season, Morelos has seemingly made it clear that he would prefer a move to the Premier League ahead of next season.
However, Gerrard and Ross Wilson must try and do everything they can to convince the 24-year-old to stay with Rangers, as he was a huge part of their impressive performances in the Premiership and in the Europa League this season, so losing him ahead of next year’s Champions League campaign would be a huge blow.
Here’s what McAvennie had to say about the forward when speaking exclusively to FFC:
“I don’t know if you can replace him, he’s such a talent. Since Defoe has gone there, he’s become a better player, he’s been a good inspiration for him. His temperament has got better, he’s still doing the odd thing but I don’t mind that.
“He’s a talent. Every year there has been people saying he’s moving to this one. He’s been all around the world, but he’s still here.
“I think Rangers will have a price, but if that price gets matched, he’ll be gone. I would like to see him leave, but that’s on a personal level.”
When questioned whether he felt Morelos was good enough to feature in the Premier League, McAvennie added:
“I think he would do well, I think he would score goals. Rangers play better when he’s playing. But I don’t think he’s the finished article, I think he can get better. If I was a Rangers fan I wouldn’t want him to leave, but everyone has got a price.”
Considering Morelos has managed 15 goals and 12 assists in all competitions this season, it would put a serious dent in Rangers’ title hopes for next season if he were to leave, so Gerrard and Ross Wilson must try and rebuff any potential summer interest in the Colombian, in the hope that he can be convinced to extend his stay at Ibrox.
And, in other news… Rangers could make huge summer profit on gem dubbed “the steal of the century”
