Rangers' hopes of re-signing Billy Gilmour on loan from Chelsea this summer have been dashed after he agreed to a season-long stay with Norwich City, which is surely a blow to Steven Gerrard at Ibrox.

The midfielder has joined the newly-promoted Canaries on loan for the 2021/22 season as Chelsea look to further his development away from Stamford Bridge.

The Scotland international, who has been linked with a potential return to Ibrox after leaving the club to join Chelsea as a 15-year-old, dazzled in the recent 0-0 draw against England at Wembley, winning the man of the match award for his performance on what was his first start for Steve Clarke's side.

His display earned him the praise of former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard, who described him as a "top, top player" on Instagram following the well-earned draw against Gareth Southgate's side.

Since leaving Ibrox, Gilmour has gone on to make just 22 appearances for the west Londoners' senior side, so a loan move was perhaps always likely to be on the cards for the 20-year-old this summer, and Rangers could well have been the ones to benefit from his immense talent.

However, it seems as if he will be starring in the Premier League for Daniel Farke's side next season, which will surely frustrate Gers fans who may have been excited by the prospect of Gilmour playing a key role in their title defence next season as well as adding some real quality in the middle of the park ahead of their Champions League return.

Although Gerrard's side look strong in midfield ahead of next season, especially with the addition of youngster Nnamdi Ofoborh, they could be set to lose the influential Glen Kamara amid interest from the Premier League. Also, Steven Davis will turn 37 in January, so adding someone with energy and talent such as Gilmour could have been a stellar addition this summer.

Therefore, it is a huge blow for Gerrard that the youngster has agreed to join Norwich instead of returning to Rangers, and the Ibrox manager may well have to look elsewhere if he wants to strengthen his midfield options ahead of the transfer window closing.
