Steven Gerrard has shown a ruthless streak by sending Glasgow Rangers youngster Kai Kennedy to Scottish Championship side Inverness Caledonian Thistle on loan for the first half of the season.
According to The Daily Record, the Rangers youngster is ready for a temporary exit from his boyhood club by signing for Inverness until January.
And it means the Ibrox outfit may lose the talented teenager for a development fee next summer.
The Rangers boss has tried to make the most of every minute of the summer transfer window, including signing Amiens midfielder Bongani Zungu on a season-long loan with two hours to spare, and he sees no part for Kennedy to play in his plans for the future, so he has made it clear he is free to find his chances elsewhere.
Kennedy has been subjected to plenty of transfer speculation this summer with some of Europe’s biggest clubs closely monitoring the situation although it appears many are willing to wait until after his contract with Rangers runs out.
Now the 18-year-old will spend the next few months with Inverness in the Championship as he wants to play regular football to improve his chances of playing elsewhere.
While Kennedy is clearly a hot prospect, Gerrard is well within his right to sort out a loan for the teenager as his first-team hopes were slim.
Gerrard has singled out the Scottish U19 international for praise in the past, telling The Daily Record in 2019 that he thinks that the left winger is a “fabulous little player”, whilst Malky Mackay has made it clear he feels he is ready for the top.
Beyond barely featuring at all last term, Kennedy played in the Rangers Colt side that competed against Caley Thistle in the Challenge Cup this year, although he failed to make much of an impression as they lost 2-1 in the semi-finals, via SofaScore.
He enjoyed a better spell in the UEFA Youth League last year with three assists to his name, but his statistics show his performances soon tailed off shortly after that.
By comparison, Ryan Kent has been an unsung hero for Gerrard’s side on the left wing so far, scoring four goals and supplying one assist in 10 Scottish Premiership appearances, whilst averaging 3.3 shots, 2.5 key passes, and 2.7 dribbles per game, via WhoScored.
After a public disagreement with Gerrard over his playing time, it is hard to see Kennedy signing a new deal with the Glasgow giants anytime soon.
Perhaps it will be best for everyone involved if/when he finally leaves for good.
AND in other news, Rangers must sign Jack Wilshere on a free transfer…
