Glasgow Rangers have had a torrid time of it as of late, losing three consecutive matches, scoring zero goals, and conceding 11 times.

A loss to arch-rivals Celtic in the Premiership and two mind-numbing Champions League defeats has seen the confidence drain from the Ibrox side and the tie against Dundee United tomorrow is a must-win for Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Performances on the pitch aren’t the only concern for the club, however, with pressure from the supporters towards Ross Wilson and the Dutchman following a transfer window that promised so much but petered out in the end.

The 47-year-old manager faces major dilemmas over the likes of Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos, whose contracts expire at the end of the season, and being valuable assets to the club, tying them down makes sense.

Ryan Jack hasn’t been discussed much despite being in the same boat as Kent and Morelos, and with Van Bronckhorst knowing the aforementioned two could bring in big profits for the Ibrox side, Jack has regressed over the previous year.

Alongside Morelos, Jack was one of the very few positives to come from the woeful managerial reign of Pedro Caixinha and slotted into the Gers midfield with ease.

He became a key member of the first team squad following the arrival of Steven Gerrard as manager, with the club aiming to reclaim the top spot in the Scottish football hierarchy, with Jordan Campbell describing him as “underrated”.

Season 2020/2021 saw Jack at his magnificent best, averaging a SofaScore rating of 7.14 as he featured in half of the sides matches as they won the Premiership crown for the first time in ten years.

He scored twice during the season, with a wonderful volley giving the Ibrox side three crucial points against Kilmarnock in the race for the title. His defensive acumen was also important, he made 1.1 tackles and 1.1 interceptions while winning 56% of his total duels as he shielded a Rangers defence that only conceded 13 league goals, breaking Chelsea’s British record of 15 set in 2004/2005.

A series of niggling injuries restricted Jack to just 19 league and European appearances last season and this has impacted the midfielder heading into the current campaign.

He has started only two league matches with a rating of 6.72 as per SofaScore and he looks a shadow of a player who was so important a couple of seasons ago.

The low point came during the Champions League defeat to Ajax where a sloppy back pass he attempted was pounced upon by Steven Bergwijn who scored the 4th goal to round off the victory.

Van Bronckhorst may not have the same urgent need to tie down Jack for the foreseeable future as Kent and Morelos, but he will have to make a decision, and with January fast approaching, it needs to be a quick one.
