Glasgow Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has dropped an in-house Ibrox update which will require Ross Wilson to act quickly as the final few days of the transfer window race into view.

What’s the news?

The Dutchman was speaking to Sky Sports about the ongoing contract scenario with a few key players, saying: “It’s the transfer window. You’re never sure, especially when you get to the latter stages of the window crazy things will happen.

“We’ve seen that everywhere before and it’s important to be prepared, but so far nothing is happening with ins or outs.

“They’re still ongoing [contract talks]. No news yet in developments so we just have to wait and see if it comes to new contracts.”

Wilson must act fast

With it seeming unlikely that there will be any major incomings at Ibrox for the remainder of the transfer window judging by Van Bronckhorst's comments, the priority will be to tie down key assets to long-term deals.

With captain James Tavernier having recently signed an extension to his current contract, Wilson must turn his attention to keeping Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos at Rangers.

Their contracts expire at the end of the season and Van Bronckhorst will surely be desperate to keep them at the club for the foreseeable future.

Morelos was the club’s top scorer last term with 19 goals, while Kent registered a wonderful 20 assists during the campaign, and the manager can't afford to lose quality like that as he looks to build his side around those two attackers.

Having signed the likes of Antonio Colak and Malick Tillman this summer to take the imminent pressure off the aforementioned Morelos and Kent, the 47-year-old is building a team which is more than capable of qualifying for the Champions League and reclaiming the Premiership crown that Celtic won last season.

Kent and Morelos were Rangers’ biggest attacking threats in 2021/22, with the Colombian having 4.49 shots per match and generating 2.65 shot-creating actions (SCA) per game. Kent's averages of 2.31 shots and 3.08 SCA per game prove that the duo were key to the Gers' success last season in reaching the Europa League final, despite Morelos missing the last few weeks of the campaign through injury.

If Wilson can tie both players down to long-term deals in the next few months, it might well end up being the sporting director's most important piece of business done while at the club. Nonetheless, with time ticking on both players' deals, the Ibrox chief must act quickly to allay any fears over the duo's futures.
