Rangers ‘increasingly likely’ to sack Gio van Bronckhorst

A big update has emerged in the saga over Glasgow Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his future at Ibrox…

What’s the latest?

According to Football Insider, Rangers are now ‘increasingly likely’ to sack the Dutch head coach during the current World Cup break.

The report claims that crisis talks were held over the weekend and that the Light Blues’ board of directors are not set to make a decision on the manager’s future.

It is stated that sporting director Ross Wilson has identified former Gers coach Mick Beale as his number one target to replace the current boss.

Potential masterclass

The Light Blues chief could now seal a masterclass at Ibrox by sacking van Bronckhorst and replacing him with a manager who could get the crowd going in Glasgow.

Indeed, the time would appear to be right for the Dutchman to leave the club. Rangers’ performance, domestically and in Europe, has left a lot to be desired this season and sections of the fanbase have grown unhappy with his efforts in the dugout.

After the 2-1 defeat to St. Johnstone earlier this month, The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell claimed that some of the supporters inside the ground were chanting for the manager to be sacked and that there were ‘mass calls’ for his dismissal on social media.

This shows that the fanbase were not content with van Bronckhorst at the time of that match and four points from the subsequent two matches seem unlikely to have changed that, as the Gers have dropped to nine points off the top of the Premiership table.

The ex-Feyenoord manager also struggled badly in the Champions League. Rangers lost all six of their group stage matches, playing Ajax, Liverpool, and Napoli twice, and became the worst side in the history of the competition as they scored two goals and conceded 22.

Beale, meanwhile, was Steven Gerrard’s assistant manager at Ibrox from June 2018 to November 2021 and played a huge role in the 2020/21 title-winning campaign.

He was a coach in the team that went unbeaten and would arrive in Glasgow with a pre-existing relationship with the supporters. This means that he could hit the ground running with the Ibrox faithful as they already know what he is about and that he knows what it takes to be successful at the club.

Therefore, Wilson could seal a masterclass in getting the fans back onside and supporting the project by bringing the Englishman in to replace van Bronckhorst.
