Rangers: Van Bronckhorst must avoid selling Glen Kamara

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has offered his thoughts on Glasgow Rangers and the future of one of their key midfielders…

What’s the word?

The reporter has stated that Giovanni van Bronckhorst could end up selling Glen Kamara before the transfer window shuts, with the Premiership club valuing him at £10m amid a host of potential suitors lining up to sign the player.

The player was left out of the squad to face Hibernian last week as Ligue 1 club Nice ramped up their interest.

Speaking to Football FanCast, O’Rourke said: “Obviously Nice have been busy this summer window, bringing in some big signings in the likes of Schmeichel and Aaron Ramsey so Glen Kamara I’m sure it would be an attractive option for him to go to the Ligue 1 club as well.

“So it all comes down to price and Giovanni van Bronckhorst thinks it’s a good deal it’s something that Rangers might end up doing.”

It would be a big mistake

Since joining Rangers from Dundee in January 2019, Kamara was a mainstay in the Light Blues’ midfield under Steven Gerrard as they claimed the Premiership title for the 55th time in 2021, failing to get on the pitch only five times during that campaign.

How many signings did Rangers make in the last summer window?

The former Gers boss referred to Kamara as a “monster” not long after he arrived at Ibrox and the 26-year-old soon displayed his talents.

Since the Dutchman took over last November, he has utilised the Finnish midfielder more in European matches (he featured in every match under Van Bronckhorst in Europe), whereas he missed seven domestic fixtures.

The 47-year-old tweaked the tactics slightly when arriving at the club last year, and although Kamara was a focal point in European matches against tougher opposition, domestically there wasn’t as much of a requirement for his abilities.

Do Rangers need to sell Glen Kamara?

Although a fee of £10m is being touted, it could be a big mistake to let his European experience go, especially with the club qualifying for the Champions League group stage.

In last season’s thrilling Europa League run, Kamara excelled in helping Rangers to reach the final. He made 0.6 key passes and 1.2 interceptions and was only dribbled past 0.4 times per match, showing his defensive acumen in the middle of the park.

The 26-year-old also completed 60% of his dribbles and won 56% of his total duels, proving that he isn’t shy in getting forward as much as possible to support attacks and is strong when it comes to one-to-one battles.

Selling a player for £10m after signing him for just £50k three-and-a-half years ago constitutes excellent business, but with the vast Champions League riches adorning the Ibrox coffers, it’s a move that the club doesn’t need to make.
