Glasgow Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has had an unwanted headache over the goalkeeping position at Ibrox this season.

The Dutch head coach would surely want, at least, two players on top form pushing each other for a place in the starting XI in each position. However, his two first-choice goalkeepers have been doing the opposite as they both have question marks over their heads.

Last season, Allan McGregor struggled in the Premiership as he averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.76 and made four errors directly leading to shots or goals, whilst only saving 66% of the shots against him - a 19% drop-off from the previous campaign.

Instead of bringing in a new shot-stopper, van Bronckhorst gave Jon McLaughlin the gloves this season and the 35-year-old has not stepped up to the plate. He has only saved 50% of the shots against him in the top-flight this season and has made one error leading to a goal in six outings, whilst averaging a score of 6.50.

These issues could have been avoided, however, if the club had not opted to cash in on one of their former number ones back in 2020 - Wes Foderingham.

The former Swindon shot-stopper played almost 150 matches for Rangers during his time in Glasgow, joining the club in the Championship, and Ross Wilson allowed him to depart on a free transfer to join Sheffield United in the summer of 2020.

Steven Gerrard and Wilson clearly deemed that he was not good enough to be the number one at Ibrox at the time but his form since moving south of the border has proven them wrong.

He spent his first year at Bramall Lane as a back-up in the Premier League before establishing himself as the first-choice in the English Championship in the 2021/22 campaign.

At the start of last season, Transfermarkt valued him at £360k. The gem then caught the eye as he saved 76% of the shots on his goal and only made one error leading to a goal, whilst averaging a SofaScore rating of 7.08, in 32 appearances.

This season, he has averaged a score of 7.06 in 10 appearances as he has saved 77% of the shots against him and avoided making any errors. The Athletic's Richard Sutcliffe hailed his "incredible" goalkeeping against Hull in a match earlier this month, with the Englishman in top form for the Blades.

At the time of writing (23/09/22), Foderingham is valued at £630k by Transfermarkt. This means that his value has rocketed 75% in one year, which shows that his performances on the pitch have been recognised as he has been in for Sheffield United over the last 14 months or so.

Therefore, Rangers had a mare by allowing him to leave on a free transfer as he has proven himself to be a top goalkeeper since leaving Ibrox and his value has soared, whilst McGregor and McLaughlin - who are both older than Foderingham - have struggled.
