Glasgow Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has shown that he is willing to offer opportunities to academy players in the first-team at Ibrox.

The Dutch head coach has handed minutes to Charlie McCann and Leon King in the Premiership this season, after providing the likes of Alex Lowry and Adam Devine with game time in the top-flight last term for the Gers.

He is prepared to take a risk and drop a young player in at the deep end to see if they sink or swim, if they are able to impress enough at youth level, and in training, to earn a call-up to the senior squad.

His willingness to give young players a chance has the potential to save Ross Wilson millions of pounds in the transfer window, as turning an academy player into a first-team regular removes the need to bring in someone in that position from another club in the future.

One gem who could end up saving the Light Blues a fortune is B Team striker Connor Young, who was brought in from Hibernian over the summer.

Head of academy, Craig Mulholland, hailed the forward's potential and the quality that he has shown in the past at the time of his arrival, saying: "He is a player that David Stevenson and our recruitment team have tracked for some time along with our technical staff who have seen him have some excellent performances against our own group.

“We believe that Connor has attributes that can be developed further working under David, Brian and their multi-disciplinary staff team."

These comments suggest that the Gers staff believe there is a top player who can be unearthed in Young further down the line, after some time in the youth set-up.

Hibs' academy director Steve Kean stated that the forward scored "a lot of goals" for their U18 team last season and he has enjoyed a solid start to life at Rangers in that regard, finding the back of the net three times and producing one assist in nine Lowland League outings, playing more than 45 minutes in three games.

He only turned 18 at the start of August and is very much still a young player learning his trade and developing, with the youngster making the step up to the fifth tier of Scottish football after playing at U18 level in 2021/22.

Young has shown great promise in his limited minutes in the Lowland League thus far and that suggests that he could become a key player in the coming months, as he gains more experience and, potentially, continues to score goals for the B Team.

Therefore, he could be one to watch out for in the future and a player van Bronckhorst could have his eye on, as bringing him through into the first-team could prevent Wilson from needing to splash the cash on a new striker in a few years' time.
