Rangers: Ibrox club must make late dart to sign Joe Rothwell

The first January transfer window at Rangers for Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been a rather tame affair but matters are starting to get exciting at Ibrox as we head towards the final few days of the market.

Juninho Bacuna has departed the club after just a matter of months as a Gers player and Amad Diallo has now also penned terms in Glasgow.

The enthralling Manchester United youngster has signed on loan for the next six months and arrives with an abundance of potential and star quality in his locker.

However, with Bacuna now leaving, it would be a good idea for van Bronckhorst to source a replacement from somewhere.

Xavi Simons has been linked regularly with a move to Scotland in January but it appears to be a deal that is unlikely now.

Do Rangers need to replace Bacuna?

Yet, one move that could still happen if the interest is still there surrounds Joe Rothwell.

The Blackburn Rovers midfielder caught the eye of Rangers a few months ago, so much so that one source told Football League World that a deal was “almost certain” to happen.

That hasn’t materialised as of yet and they may have to move swiftly if they want anything concluded with Bournemouth recently having a £2m bid rejected.

As a result, it could be a costly transfer to conclude in the remaining days of the window but in the words of Tony Mowbray, he is an “exciting talent” who is “exceedingly fast.”

That is a set of emphatic quotes but sums up what he could bring to Ibrox; excitement and the ability to catch the opposition out.

Capable of playing out wide, in the number 10 role or further back in a deep-lying position, it’s evident that Rothwell would be able to cover a multitude of bases under van Bronckhorst.

Who did Rangers beat in their first game of 2021?

Versatility is always important but so are the star qualities he could offer to the Gers head coach. He’s registered ten goal involvements which include seven assists in England’s second-tier this term.

Furthermore, the £1.8m-rated gem registered 1.6 key passes and 1.6 dribbles per match, underlying a phenomenal level of progression and ball carrying in his game.

This was a facet that Bacuna also thrived in, making an average of two key passes and dribbles combined in the Premiership.

Rothwell’s potential arrival wouldn’t be a like-for-like replacement but it would certainly help fill the void left behind in midfield, especially with Ianis Hagi now on the treatment table as well.

A deal feels unlikely in the remaining days of the window but Ross Wilson must consider a swoop nonetheless.
