The January transfer window is open for business and Glasgow Rangers head coach Michael Beale may be in the market to improve his squad at Ibrox.

He replaced Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the dugout during the break for the 2022 World Cup and this month is his first opportunity to make his own signings as the first-team manager of the Scottish giants.

Beale has, however, ruled out the chances of bringing in a new shot-stopper before the end of the season. He said:

"Won't be strengthening the goalkeeper position next month. When the ball goes in the goal, everyone looks at the goalkeeper for a mistake.

"Allan McGregor has saved this club time and time again. He made a big save last week against Hibs that kept the score where we needed it, got us to half-time.

"I thought the second strike from Leighton Clarkson was an excellent goal. The first one, he's gone the goalie's side but the goalie's obviously moved."

The Light Blues have been linked with a summer swoop to sign Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, instead of bringing in a player in the immediate future, and they could replicate Celtic's Joe Hart blinder by snapping him up.

Hart joined the Old Firm side after being a reserve at Tottenham in the summer of 2021 and he has kept 25 clean sheets in 50 Premiership outings for the Hoops to date, with 34 shutouts in 80 appearances in all competitions.

They snapped up a back-up, veteran, shot-stopper from the English top-flight and he has thrived in Scotland, proving to be a huge player for Ange Postecoglou's team.

Begovic could now have a similar impact for Rangers next season. He is currently the second choice behind Jordan Pickford at Goodison Park but he was Bournemouth's number one in the 2020/21 campaign and kept 15 clean sheets in 45 league matches for the Cherries.

Former Premier League midfielder Lee Hendrie once described the Bosnia international as a "big player" and he is vastly experienced with 256 appearances in the English top flight.

The £43k-per-week stopper, who has been capped 63 times by his country, has also kept two clean sheets in three appearances for Everton in all competitions this term, including one in his only league outing.

Therefore, Beale could certainly replicate Celtic's Joe Hart masterclass by bringing Begovic to improve the team.

He has Premier League quality between the sticks, with his form in limited minutes this term and his previous performances for Bournemouth indicating that he still has what it takes to be a difference-maker in goal.
