Glasgow Rangers head coach Michael Beale could be a busy man between now and Tuesday's deadline for the January transfer window, with moves in and out of Ibrox.

One player who could need to be replaced in the final days of the window, or in the summer, is central defender Filip Helander as his contract at Ibrox is due to expire at the end of May.

The Sweden international is set to become a free agent ahead of the 2023/24 campaign and Beale has already confirmed that he is in the market to sign another centre-back with the coach recently admitting:

“I would like to add another centre-half to the squad and I think we’ll be looking at the goalie situation in the summer as well as looking for another No 9."

Given that Connor Goldson, Ben Davies, Leon King, and John Souttar are all contracted to the club beyond this summer, the arrival of another player in that position could signal the end of Helander's time in Glasgow as it would be an odd move to extend his deal whilst signing a sixth centre-back option.

The left-footed Gers defender played six times in the Premiership last season and averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.75 as he won 59% of his defensive duels, which shows that the titan was solid enough but his injury issues prevented him from getting on the pitch with regularity.

By the time the enforcer is projected to return from his current injury in March, the 29-year-old will have missed a whopping 107 competitive matches for Rangers since the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

Beale could now wave bye-bye to the injury-prone Helander by securing a deal to sign Jake Cooper, whether that comes before Tuesday's deadline or in the summer.

The Gers head coach recently refused to rule out being keen on signing the Millwall defender and admitted that he has had previous interest in snapping the 27-year-old up.

Cooper's contract with the English club is up at the end of the season and the Light Blues could tempt the Championship side into selling him in the next 24 hours or wait until the summer to sign him for nothing.

The left-footed centre-back, who was once hailed as "invaluable" to Millwall by manager Gary Rowett, has been in fine form in the second division of English football this term as the 6 foot 6 colossus has averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.97 across 27 appearances - winning 60% of his duels.

This comes after the defender averaged a rating of 7.13 and won 64% of his battles in 42 Championship outings for the Lions in the 2021/22 campaign.

These statistics show that the talented defender, who has not suffered any notable injuries in his career at Millwall, has consistently delivered dominant performances at the back and that is why the Englishman could be an excellent addition to the Gers squad.

Cooper is a reliable player for the Lions, both in terms of his displays and his availability, and that is why he could be an upgrade on Helander and his arrival could allow Beale to cut ties with the Swedish defender.
