An update has emerged on Glasgow Rangers target Ross Stewart ahead of the upcoming January transfer window...

What's the talk?

According to The Sun, Greek giants Olympiacos have joined the race to sign the Sunderland centre-forward as a number of clubs are said to have been alerted to his potential availability.

The report claims that he is yet to agree to a contract extension at the Stadium of Light and that the player is open to securing a transfer outside or inside of Britain.

It is stated that it remains to be seen whether or not Michael Beale will pursue a deal for the Scotland international after replacing Giovanni van Bronckhorst at the helm, although the Black Cats are expecting to receive offers from elsewhere during the window.

Could get Ibrox rocking

The new Gers head coach must now reignite the torch and carry on the club's interest into January as he could get Ibrox rocking by sealing a deal to sign Stewart heading into the second half of the season.

Light Blues supporters will undoubtedly want to see their team strengthen the squad due to their dreadful first half of the campaign. Rangers are currently nine points behind their rivals at the top of the Premiership table and are out of European competition after finishing bottom of their Champions League group.

Therefore, signing a Scotland international who has been in phenomenal form over the last 18 months could excite the fanbase and get them rocking and ready to get behind the team in the months to come.

Stewart has plundered 31 goals and six assists in 56 appearances in the English Championship and League One combined since the start of last season.

His current teammate Alex Pritchard previously heaped praise on the attacker's all-round play, saying:

"[Stewart] is unbelievable. The size of him, on the ball, he can run, he can hold the ball up, he's good with his feet. He's got everything. He’s great in the air. Holds the ball up and he gets in behind and you see in the semi-finals – the goal he got in behind and he’s so quick. And he’s been a revelation this year for us.”

These comments from the attacking midfielder show that Rangers would be signing a complete striker who can suit a multitude of styles, as he can play to feet or in behind, whilst being proficient on the deck and in the air.

His goalscoring record for Sunderland also indicates that he has the quality to be a prolific scorer if Beale can get him firing, which is another reason why the manager could get Ibrox rocking by bringing the 26-year-old to the club in January.

Therefore, the 42-year-old coach must reignite the club's swoop for Stewart and beat Olympiacos, along with any other interested parties, to his signature.
