A major update has emerged on Rangers and their attempts to bring a new striker to Ibrox in the summer transfer window...

What's the talk?

According to reports in France, via the Daily Record, the Light Blues are in talks with Stade Rennais over a deal to sign Matthis Abline ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

The report claims that a loan, until the end of the season, with an option to sign him permanently is the most likely option at this moment in time.

Ross Wilson has already brought in John Souttar and Antonio Colak to Ibrox and Abline may be next in line to come through the door.

Imagine him and Colak

By snapping up a deal to sign the Frenchman, Gio van Bronckhorst can form a dream strikeforce. He can have the experience of their recent Croatian dynamo mixed with the youth and potential of the Rennais predator.

The gem has produced 30 goals and assists combined for club and country - at youth and senior level - so far in his career, including an impressive 16 goals in 26 appearances for France at various age groups.

At the age of 19, he is in the infancy of his professional career and has plenty of time left to grow and improve as a player. This means that he would be coming in with a view to making an impact in the long-term, rather than being a ready-made frontline option for van Bronckhorst.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig previously dubbed him "highly talented" and his record at international level suggests that the comment is accurate. He has shown that he can score goals on a consistent basis for his country and it is now down to him to translate that to senior football - after scoring six goals in 16 Ligue 2 games last term.

Colak, meanwhile, scored 19 times in 40 matches for Malmo in 2021/22 and found the back of the net on 51 occasions in 90 outings for HNK Rijeka earlier in his career. The 28-year-old has been around the block and knows what it takes to score goals week-in-week-out.

This means that he can be the perfect mentor for Abline and help the teenager to fulfil his potential if he arrives at Ibrox this summer. Throw in the potential of Alfredo Morelos still being at the club and Kemar Roofe - who is experienced in a Rangers shirt - and the Gers would have an exciting set of options at the top end of the pitch.
