A big Rangers transfer claim has been made on Allan McGregor, regarding his future at Ibrox beyond the summer…
According to Jordan Campbell of The Athletic, the Gers veteran will be leaving Glasgow upon the expiry of his current contract at the end of the season.
He is poised to leave the club alongside fellow first-team players Connor Goldson and Steven Davis, whose deals run out at the same time.
Fans will surely be buzzing with this news as recent matches have suggested that time is indeed up for McGregor as the number one. Whilst he has been a fine servant for the club over the years and may have the respect of the supporters, he cannot continue playing forever.
He turned 40 last month and is in the final throes of his career, which has shown on the pitch with some of his performances this season.
The shot-stopper has made one error directly leading to a shot and three errors directly leading to goals in the Premiership and this particular statistic does not even factor in every shot that he should be saving but fails to.
In the recent 3-3 draw with Ross County, McGregor fumbled two simple pieces of shot-stopping and cross collecting to allow the opposition to score twice – one of which came in the 96th minute to surrender the three points. He was then slow to get down to both of Reo Hatate’s goals in the Old Firm match, although he did also make some key saves down his throat to keep the score down.
Gio van Bronckhorst may also want to bring in a goalkeeper with better distribution. He has completed just 34% of his chipped passes this season and a meagre 21% in the opposition half. This suggests that his long passing leaves plenty to be desired and the Dutch head coach should look to bring in a goalkeeper with the ability to play out from the back with a higher success rate.
This is another reason why fans will be delighted that he is calling time on his spell at Ibrox. Watching his attempted passes out to the full-backs sail out of play at times can be frustrating for the supporters and they will surely be excited to see a new number one in town next season.
