Rangers could ditch Scott Arfield by reigniting Oscar Gloukh interest

Glasgow Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson will have to wield his axe in the coming months as a number of players are out of contract at Ibrox next summer.

Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos, Allan McGregor, Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack are just a few of the Light Blues gems who are poised to depart on free transfers, whilst Malik Tillman and James Sands will both leave upon the expiry of their loan deals unless the club take up their respective options to buy.

One player Wilson needs to finally ditch is veteran midfielder Arfield. The former Burnley man has been a fine servant to the Gers over the years, making 211 appearances to date, but his end product has not been good enough in the last 18 months or so.

He produced six goals and zero assists in 50 matches in all competitions last season, which included zero goal contributions in 16 outings in Europe – playing in the Champions League and Europa League.

The 34-year-old’s form has perked up in the 2022/23 campaign as he has scored five goals and provided one assist in 21 matches so far, with two of those goals coming in the League Cup.

Wilson could bin the experienced dud, however, by reigniting his interest in signing Maccabi Tel Aviv maestro Oscar Gloukh in the January transfer window.

What nationality does Mateusz Zukowski represent?

Earlier this year, Gers podcaster Andy Barnett reported that the club had been scouting the young attacking midfielder. He told the Heart & Hand podcast:

“They (Rangers) were meant to be looking at Oscar Gloukh, who I’ve seen play in person and is an absolutely superbly talented youngster, a wonderkid.

“He came on for Maccabi Tel-Aviv in the final third of the season and was just the best player in the league in the final third. He scored against Maccabi Haifa and Hapoel Tel-Aviv which are the two biggest games and there was meant to be clubs from La Liga as well as Rangers looking at him last night.”

Should Rangers sign Gloukh?

Football consultant Raphael Gellar described him as an “exciting talent” and his statistics back up the hype as he has been in top form this season.

The 18-year-old has plundered four goals and five assists in 11 league matches for Maccabi, after managing three strikes in eight games in the division in 2021/22.

Gloukh, whose manager valued him at £8m earlier this year, has shown incredible promise as a teenager as he has made a huge impact in the final third at first-team level.

This shows that he has the potential to score and assist goals on a regular basis if he can continue to improve and develop his game as he gains more experience, which suggests that he could be an upgrade on the underperforming Arfield.

He is 16 years younger than the former Burnley man and could be an excellent signing for the Gers in the long-term, given his scope to grow, as well as an immediate short-term improvement on the Canadian midfielder.
