There has been an update regarding the future of Rangers defender Borna Barisic at Ibrox...

What's the word?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, one has suggested that Rangers could be willing to let the defender leave Ibrox this summer, if a suitable offer comes in for Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Ross Wilson.

Amid reports linking the 29-year-old with a move to Turkish outfit Trabzonspor, transfer insider Pete O'Rourke stated: “Well, this move has been talked about in probably every transfer window for the last couple of years.

“We’ve all expected Barisic possibly to move on, there’s been talks of moves to the Premier League and moves to other European leagues as well, but he has remained at Rangers.

“It’ll come down to fees, if somebody makes a suitable offer for Barisic, I’m sure Rangers would consider it.”

The 26-cap international - who made the move to Glasgow on a £2.2m deal from NK Osijek in 2018 - has himself recently hinted that he could potentially be open to a departure, despite reports that his priority is to stay put, with two years still left to run on his current deal.

Supporters frustrated

That news will no doubt come as a huge source of frustration for those of a Gers persuasion, with supporters seemingly fearful of seeing their key men poached by other clubs.

Fellow defender Calvin Bassey has also been heavily linked with a reunion with former boss Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa, with van Bronckhorst's side potentially set to be short of options on the left of defence if Barisic is also to depart.

The £18k-per-week brute has been a rock for the Scottish Premiership outfit in recent seasons, notably enjoying a fine 2021/22 campaign in which he averaged 2.1 tackles and two clearances per game from his 23 league outings, while also winning a solid 67% of his total duels and netting three times.

That form saw him record an impressive 7.29 average match rating, as per SofaScore - the fifth-highest among the Rangers squad - with the 6 foot 1 colossus having proven himself a useful asset both defensively and in attack.

Once dubbed "outstanding" by Gerrard, the £5.4m-rated ace has now racked up 155 appearances for the club in all competitions, chipping in with seven goals and 35 assists in that time and notably helping the club to a 55th league title in 2021.

Some may view it as a perfect time to part ways after the recent Scottish Cup triumph, although the defender would no doubt prove hard to replace, with it set to be an unwanted headache for all concerned if he is to depart in the current window.

Having stormed to the Europa League final last term, the club is looking set to kick on again under van Bronckhorst next term, with both the Dutchman - and supporters - unlikely to want to lose such an important figure.
