Rangers could repeat Calvin Bassey masterclass with Yfeko deal

Rangers have been active in the January transfer window and have completed three signings so far this month and two permanent departures.

James Sands, Amad Diallo and John Souttar coming in – the latter being on a pre-contract deal. Nathan Patterson has also left Ibrox for a record fee, joining Premier League side Everton, along with Juninho Bacuna leaving to sign for Birmingham.

One player who appears set to potentially complete the club’s signings this month is free agent defender Johnly Yfeko, formerly of Leicester. He is reportedly set to sign on a free transfer after undergoing a trial with the Scottish giants last week.

Do Rangers need any more signings?

Bassey 2.0

By bringing Yfeko to Ibrox, van Bronckhorst could repeat the club’s Calvin Bassey masterclass.

The Gers signed the current first-team defender on a free transfer from the Foxes and he has come on leaps and bounds this season to establish himself as a key player for the Dutchman.

Bassey is capable of playing at left-back and centre-back, forcing his way into the XI in the latter and making a name for himself alongside Connor Goldson. He has started 12 games at centre-back since van Bronckhorst’s arrival and the Gers are unbeaten in those matches, keeping eight clean sheets in that time.

The Nigerian international has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.97 across 17 games in the Premiership to date, showing that he has been an impressive performer for the club. Van Bronckhorst has put his faith in him and the defender has, largely, paid that back with excellent displays.

This proves that Ross Wilson pulled off a masterclass in the deal to sign him from Leicester for nothing and they could replicate that success with Yfeko.

He is very similar to Bassey in that he is a young defender, who used to play for Leicester, capable of slotting in at left-back or centre-back. The Gers could allow him to learn from the current Light Blues star and mold his game on him as he develops in the academy set-up.

How well do you know Morelos? First... who did he score his 100th goal against?

Of course, there is no guaranteeing that it will provide the same outcome but there appears to be little risk in trying, given that he is set to join on a free transfer. Van Bronckhorst could enjoy helping him fulfil his potential in training if he is given the chance to impress for the first team and it could be another masterclass if he does become a success for the Glasgow giants.
